Big Rock Tones! - Airbourne – A few months ago we posted that I had spent time in Nashville TN working with Australian based band Airbourne as they were in recording their new record 'Boneshaker' with producer Dave Cobb in RCA Studio A. It was awesome working with such great people, great to hear a record tracked on 2" tape & we had an amazing time all the way around! We restored some older Marshalls & Modded some Marshalls that were used by Joel O'Keeffe & our Voodoo V-Plex 50/100 amp head was used by Harri Harrison. Here's a YouTube video of 'Boneshaker' to give you an idea of the tones that were captured

Joe Perry of Aerosmith - Vintage Blond Fender Bassman

Joe Perry of Aerosmith – We’ve been super busy & haven’t had a chance to post this until now. Here is a vintage blond Bassman we Modified & can be heard in Joe’s live rig with Aerosmith throughout their Vegas residency. This amp had been in Joe’s storage locker for some time & was strident in the high end, hard to play & in need of some well deserved TLC. For more info please read on!

We performed a CapJob with custom values as well as new 2 watt resistors in B+ / high voltage rail, we converted the stock Bias Supply over to an adjustable Bias Supply, rebuilt the Rectifier & Bias Supply board as it had been poorly worked on by a prior tech. Numerous carbon comp resistors were off tolerance & noisy, Several coupling & signal caps were leaking DC & there were a great deal of cold solder connections from the previous tech. We repaired all the cold solder connections & proceeded forward with Modding the amp to better suit Joe’s playing style as well as blend with the rest of his live rig.

The stock AC Power Cable has been replaced with a thin orange extension cord. We replaced this with one of our Voodoo V50/50 8FT IE Power Cables. We disconnected the Ground switch, Properly cleaned all control pots as well as all tube sockets, grounds & placed the amp on our proprietary break in rig before shipping the amp out to Las Vegas. Over all we rebuilt 90% of the amplifier.

This is just a brief over view of the work performed & we have 2 additional vintage black face Bassmans we are currently finalizing as well as a vintage Vox AC30 combo for Joe. We also have a new product we are working on per Joe's request, more to follow on that soon.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask & I will reply as time allows. Happy 4th of July holiday to those who reside here in the USA! Please feel free to share as you like or tag a friend! Have an amazing day today & don’t forget to do a kindness for someone along the way – Trace Davis, President / Founder

Frank Hannon Marshall Amp Mod - Tesla

Frank Hannon of Tesla! – Back in September of 2018 we designed a Signature Series Platinum Modification for the amazingly talented Frank Hannon. I met with Frank while he was on tour with Tesla & we hung out for a bit. We talked guitars & looked inside a few guitars, talked amps, pedals & more. I was able to watch his hands up close as he played back stage, which tells me volumes about how a player wants an amp to feel as well as respond.

I took a Marshall JCM900 100 watt, model 4100 back with me to the shop. I set about designing a Custom Modification for Frank’s playing style & installed the Mod into the amp. I then drew up specs for a set of Custom Transformers to work hand-in-hand with the circuitry Mods & sent the specs to Mercury Magnetics. The result is a Frank Hannon Platinum Modification that sounds & feels amazing to play on!

Frank has been gigging with this amp ever since he received it. If you haven not had the pleasure of seeing Tesla live I would highly recommend it as they are truly amazing! Frank Hannon & Dave Rude are among the top guitar duos out there and it’s been a honor to work them.

Special thanks to Frank Hannon, Ernie Hudson & the entire Tesla crew for their hospitality & incredibly good times on the road! Feel free to share as you like & do a kindness for someone along the way today – Trace Davis, President / Founder Voodoo Amplification

Joe Perry's of Aerosmith 2019 Live Amp Rig

Joe Perry of Aerosmith's 2019 Live Rig! See Details Below --- Towards the end of January I traveled to Aerosmith's rehearsal complex in Boston MA to get Joe's Live Rig ready for 2019. The rig photo was taken during the Super Bowl show they played. We have more behind the scenes photos we took as I was working on the rig & we'll post those shortly. Below are the details on the amps & most of the gear we worked on;

1 - Voodoo Custom Modified Marshall Super PA Amp designed to match Joe's playing style with Voodoo Post Phase Inverter Master Volume.

2 & 3 - Voodoo Custom Modified Fender Dual Showman Head designed to match Joe's playing style with Voodoo Post Phase Inverter Master Volume.

4 - Voodoo Amps Custom 'JP30' - Joe has always loved the sound of a Vox AC30 2x12 mixed with older Marshalls but the AC30's could not keep up with the 100 watt Marshalls. Using a V-Plex chassis & panel set we custom designed a circuit to simulate the tone of an AC30 complete with Voodoo Designed Mercury Magnetics Transformers complete & (4) EL34 power tubes to provide 100 watts. His tech placed the yellow sticker "30" under the V-Plex logo.

5 - Voodoo Amps Hand-Wired V-Plex 100 Watt with Post Phase Inverter Master Volume with EL34's. This is an older V-Plex, which is easy to spot as given the Gold Circle-V emblem, Gold knobs & the gold etched metal panels.

6 - Voodoo Amps 4x12" Speaker Cabinet with matching Gold metal Circle-V emblem. This cabinet is loaded with Celestion G12H-55 30 watt Heritage Greenbacks & wired to 16ohms. Note - Other speaker cabinets have an X-Pattern of Alnico Creambacks & Alnico Golds. Others have original vintage Greenbacks.

7 - Voodoo Custom Modified Marshall 1959. This amp was in rough shape when we first received it as it had been badly Modified several times. We stripped the amp & installed a hand-wired board & with a Custom Circuit designed for Joe's playing style.

Special thanks to Joe Perry, Joe's Guitar Tech Marco Moir, Johnny B, Bobby Schneck, Greg Howard & crew! Photo credit to Marco Moir

Joe Perry of Aerosmith 2017 Rig Rundown - Most of the amps have been covered here on on our News Page as well as on our Facebook page(s) except the Custom 'JP30', which I initially designed for Joe. We’ll post a more in depth write up shortly as it’s actually a very unique design. The vintage NOS Vox logo was one that was laying around in the Aerosmith warehouse from back in the day. This was applied after the amp left our facility as a way of to paying homage to achieving classic vintage tones from a new design.

This video starts at the amp section but if you want to see Joe’s pedal board just start the video from the beginning. If you have any questions about Joe's amps please feel free to ask. We would like to thank our dear friends at TC Electronics & Joe's tech Marco Moir for making this video.

We've worked on all the amps in this video with the exception of the Supro, which is stock. The Marshall Super PA amp is Modified as are the (2) Fender Dual Showmans & the Marshall 'Pump' amp (which was also Modded back in the day), all of which are covered in depth here on our Facebook page(s). For the record there is no affiliation between Vox & Voodoo Amps.

I'll be on the road for a few days but I'll check in as time allows. Feel free to share as you like or tag a friend. - Trace Davis, President / Founder

The Story behind the Richard Fortus ‘R4 Single’ Amp!

The Story behind the Richard Fortus ‘R4 Single’ Amp – As many have asked I thought I would share this story here so everyone could read it. The ‘R4 Single’ is a unique & unusual design offering a great deal of different tones. Going back several years this amp initially started out as a clone of Mick Mars’ #1 recording amp, which Richard purchased from Mick. This amp was initially Modded by Jose A however it’s not the usual Mods Jose was most known for, it was less gainy & more organic sounding.

I first met Richard & Jason Baskin (Guitar Tech) on the 2007 Winter Namm Show Floor in Anaheim CA. We spoke at length about the amp & that he had several companies try to clone it. Shortly there after Richard sent the amp to us along with a pallet of Marshalls he purchased that were all manufactured in the same year. The original amp had been on the road & had not been properly serviced since Jose Modded it so the first order of business was to bring give it some well deserved TCL. It’s my understanding that this amp was used on all the Motley Crue albums, which in my very humble opinion it was best captured on the album ‘Dr Feelgood’ by producer Bob Rock & engineer Randy Staub.

I blue printed the amp from top to bottom, made detailed schematics, bill of materials along with detailed videos & photos. I then performed the necessary maintenance, cleaned up solder connections as necessary, performed a CapJob, Retubed, Biased, etc & then made a 2nd set of schematics, videos & photos to compare against one another. There’s a variety of reasons for this but we’ll save that for a more technical review in the future.

I then set out going through the pallet of Marshalls to find the closest related donor to create a clone. Unfortunately the lam thickness on every Output, Power & Choke Transformer were different. Additionally none of the primary impedances were the same on the Output Transformers & every Power Transformer provided different B+ voltages loaded & unloaded. IE: in short, not one was the same & none matched the original amp (more on that later).

Richard & I talked & felt that in order to replicate the tone & feel of the original we would have to design-&-build a Custom Amp from the ground up. I removed the transformer set, measured & documented everything. I then had had our good friends at Mercury Magnetics spin up a set. I then laid out a hand-wired circuit board & delved into building the amp using one of our Voodoo ‘V-Rock’ hand-wired chassis’.

Once completed we then sent that amp to Richard along with a Custom IEC Power Cable (more on that later), which he then began using with GnR. As a side bar, this is the same amp Richard used on several album sessions, GnR tours as well as the ‘Chinese Democracy’ album, The Dead Daises album & tours, in addition to the Rhianna & Thin Lizzy tours Richard performed on.

Improvements – GnR were in rehearsals for the up coming ‘Not In This Lifetime’ Reunion Tour & the amp was (improperly) diagnosed with a shorted Output Transformer so Richard sent the amp to us to go through. The OT tested out fine & I found a shorted 1ohm resistor to ground off from the cathode of the power tube as a one of the EL34 power tubes had shorted. This was fortuitous as this was the first time I was able to spend some quality time with the amp since we had first built it.

Having watched Richard play guitar up close several times & knowing what his ears like to hear as well as what his hands like to feel, I made some additional tweaks to the circuit in the midrange, I also gave it what I like to call an ‘easier-to-play’ feel & it was also time to replace the Filter Caps. I performed a CapJob with some amended values, Retubed the amp & placed it on our proprietary Break-In Rig & shipped it out to the rehearsal facility. We were also working on the ‘R4 Single’ Signature Series at the same time.

R4 Production Model – Richard reported back that he loved the improved sound & feel on the R4 prototype so I implemented those changes into the production model along with some additional versatility. I should note I am not a fan of versatility if it compromises the tone or feel of the amp.

From a technical point of view the design has (3) Gain controls though you only see (2) on the front panel. It has an incredible 3-dimensional girth & width on the low end which is different than any other amp I’ve ever worked on. While you can get convincing plexi style tones, the R4 is by no means a ‘plexi-clone’. Richard & I also wanted to design in some versatility that the prior versions did not have. IE: Each Gain control has its own (3) Position ‘Bright’ Switch, which effects gain, low end as well as feel & over all Brightness.

Effects Loop – The original amp did not have a ‘Buffered’ Effects Loop & for 50% of most players a Buffered Loop is a must. I’ve worked on countless Effect Loop designs but to my ears & hands they tend to alter the tone & feel of the amp when you turn the loop on & off. These days Loops are usually a solid state design, which of course helps reduce cost & there’s nothing wrong with that. To my hands & ears I still prefer a Tube so we went with our own Tube Buffered Loop, which works equally well with both pedals & rack gear. It’s incredibly transparent & also ‘feels’ the same whether it’s in or out of the circuit.

Over all, the R4 literally sounds-&-feels like an ‘old’ amp but is also remarkably flexible. The sound & character of each guitar comes through as well as the most subtle nuances. It also works amazingly well with a variety of guitars such as Scala’s, Trusarts ,Gretch’s, Strat’s, Tele’s, Semi-Hollow Bodies, Les Paul’s, & more, all of which Richard uses in the live GnR shows.

Richard’s words speak far louder than mine but in my humble opinion I truly believe we have not only captured the spirit the original amp but we were able to raise the bar in order to offer a high end product with zero compromise. You can get Richard’s studio tones & live tones as well as Mick’s - but equally important, you can find your own voice as well.

We also have a new website that is nearly complete, which will be dedicated to the products & will contain far more photos, descriptions, updated pricing & more. I hope each & every one of you has an amazing day & do a kindness for someone along the way today – Trace Davis, President / Founder

Aerosmith - Brad Whitford's Voodoo Amps Modded JTM45

Brad Whitford of Aerosmith – We worked on this amp back at the same time we Modded the ’74 Super Lead for Brad, which his also on the road with him. This amp started out life as a Reissue JTM45 & arrived to us in non working order. Once the amp was repaired I designed a Custom Circuit loosely based around a couple of the best sounding original JTM45’s I’ve ever worked on & blended it with a 1987 Super Lead’esq vibe. There is a push/pull control that allows for a smoother or more compressed feel as well as an option for more touch sensitivity. We kept with the theme of using a 5AR4 / GZ34 Rectifier Tube but instead of KT66’s I chose 6L6’s along with a Custom CapJob & no Master Volume. It stands on its own & blends amazingly well with the previous amp we did for Brad. Feel free to share as you like or tag a friend. Have a great week, a great Memorial Day Weekend & please do a kindness for someone along the way – Trace Davis, President / Founder

Brad Whiford of Aerosmtih - Here’s a quick photo of a Voodoo Custom Modified Marshall Super Lead from ‘74 for Brad, this amp has already been implemented into Brad’s 2017 Live Rig. This amp had been worked on by a previous tech & required some much needed TLC to make it tour worthy. We cleaned all faulty solder connections, Performed a Custom CapJob, Installed (2) New ARS12AX7JJ’s & (1) ARS12AX7A preamps tubes, (2) NOS GE 6CA7’s, Designed & Installed a Custom Circuit specifically for Brad with no Master Volume. This amp was originally intended for use in the UK & still had the Bulgin style push-in connector for the Speaker Impedance Selector. We disconnected this & hard wired the Speaker Selections to the ¼” Speaker Jacks. The #8 was on the amp when we received it & most likely has been re-numbered for the current tour. Feel free to share as you like or tag a friend.

Update – In the previous post I shared that we have an immediate family member in the ICU who was in a very bad way, that person is my wife Cindy. I have struggled with how to write this or if I should post this as we’ve made it a point to never post about personal issues, instead choosing to keep posts positive in nature. Many of you know or have come to know her through working with Cindy since she officially came on board with us in 2005 to. As such wanted to share the following with you;

On Feb 27th Cindy was taken to a local hospital & was transferred a few days later to a Specialty Intensive Care Unit in Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester NY where she has been fighting for her life.

Over all she has been diagnosed with a significant Subdural Hematoma (bleeding) on the left side of her Brain moving her brain over 1cm, Pancreatitis, Swollen Gallbladder, Liver Failure, Severe Respiratory Distress Syndrome & Acute Kidney Failure. She is presently under going 24/7 dialysis & as well as having had a Tracheotomy, which is connected to a Respirator machine that helps her to breath. She has had (2) severe Upper GI bleeds that they were able to resolve, she became unresponsive on March 8th, a feeding tube was installed & she has been receiving daily maintenance in the way of various medications.

She has had some positive gains along the way, baby steps if you will, but did become cognitively responsive on Sunday the 19th. She can slightly flicker her fingers & toes though she is unable to move the right hand of her body at this time. She has a very long road ahead of her & we will need an office person shortly to take her place.
All future postings will be in regards to Voodoo Amps & Voodoo Amps Products. We will be posting all future updates on Cindy on her Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/cynthia.davis.9440?ref=br_rs).

Regarding Business – The Voodoo Amps Production Line has not been affected. Mods & what few Hand-Builds remain have been waiting for me to return. If you have called & left messages I apologize. I have been at her side from Feb 27th until March 20th. I am back in the shop this week trying to catch up on emails, phone calls, Mods & few Hand-Wired builds. Naturally we did not see this coming not could we plan for this & I assure you we are doing all that we can to get back with everyone. I kindly ask for your patience, positive thoughts & prayers. Thank you so very much - Trace Davis, President / Founder

Tonal Consulation & Clarifying a Few Things

From a Facebook Post - I am not sure where to begin but it has occurred to me that we need to clarify a few things so please bear with me gang. In no particular order - We receive a great deal of correspondence from players looking for free advice on how they should go about getting the tone they are looking for with an amp made by another manufacturer. This comes in the form of asking how to Mod one’s amp, questions on the one’s over all rig, tubes, speakers, cables & so on.

To field one’s question(s) properly requires my asking several questions, your answers usually spur on more questions & the idea is to for me to determine what the course of action is that will best meet your needs. Whether it’s a phone call or several emails back-&-forth the average time invested on our part is approximately 30-45 minutes of time. Unfortunately this is not something that I can do free-of-charge. If I make an exception for one I have to make an exception for everyone & we cannot make a living working for free.

1.) In the interests of adding some clarity there is no gray area for folks;

A.) Questions pertaining to new or used Voodoo Production Models are more than welcome.

B.) Questions on Amps we have Modified in the past are also welcome but we ask that you visit ‘Voodoo Verify’ & enter the amp’s Serial Number into Voodoo Verify’ as 95% of all amps we have Modified, Serviced or Repaired are listed including dates & description of work performed (http://voodooamps.com/home/AboutUs/VerifyyourVoodoo/tabid/1016/Default.aspx).

C.) A & B are ‘free-of-charge’ but we kindly as respectfully ask that you use the resource wisely as there is only so much of me to go around (just being honest).

2.) Tonal Consultation - We do offer a Tonal Consultation Service that is available to everyone, which is $62.50 billed in (15) minute intervals or $250.00 an hour. We accept Debit or Credit Cards in the form of Visa, MasterCard, Discover & Amex. To schedule a Consultation Call you may PM us here on Facebook or through the contact page of our website (http://voodooamps.com/home/ContactUs.aspx) I would put the email address here but the 'bots' bombard us with spam-emails (no one likes spam--lol)

I realize this may be met with varying opinions by some but please know I am not trying to be disrespectful in any way & it is not my intention to offend anyone, truly & sincerely. At present I am working (7) days a week to catch up what remains of our backlog. IE: we have a select few Mods & (3) Hand Wired amp models that requires myself working on them exclusively. Our Production Line demands a great deal of my time & once the a fore mentioned orders are completed I will be dedicating my time to our current Production Line, going on the road with Artists & visiting Dealers.

We will continue to post updates-&-updates here much the same as we always have & I will chime in as time allows. I do very much enjoy interacting with you all & I cannot thank you enough for your understanding & continued support, it means the world to all of us as we put our hearts-&-soul into everything we do! Thanks so very much gang & I hope every one of you is doing well!! Back to soldering I go! :) – Trace Davis, President / Founder of Voodoo Amps

We are Very Proud to Welcome Paul Jackson of Blackberry Smoke to the Voodoo Family!

Blackberry Smoke is one of the select few that has forged their own unique sound. Founded in 2001 & often described as Southern Rock meets Country Rock, their live shows are nothing short of stunning! Having toured with such acts as Zac Brown Band, Eric Church, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gov't Mule & any more the band is quickly gaining popularity as one of the fore most touring acts on the scene today.

Blackberry Smoke released their fifth studio album "Like an Arrow" on October 14th, 2016 via their own record label, 3 Legged Records. The album landed at #1 on the US Billboard Country & Americana / Folk charts as well as the UK Rock & Independent Albums charts during release week. Past record labels include Southern Ground & Rounder Records.

Tone Hound - Paul Jackson has a great collection of guitars favoring Les Pauls as of late with P90's & P100's as well as Vintage Style 'PAF' humbuckers. Voodoo Amps President / Founder Trace Davis specifically designed a new circuit for Paul to match his playing style & use of vintage style pickups. Trace installed the circuit into a Marshall JCM800 2204 50 watter (see photo) complete with EL34 Power Tubes & 12AX7 Preamp Tubes.

Buy the records, go see the band live - you won't be sorry! Amazing musicianship & amazing song writing by a great Rock-N-Roll band from Georgia! 'Paul Jackson & Charlie Starr are one of the best guitar-teams I've ever worked with & its an honor to welcome Mr Paul Jackson to the Voodoo Amps Family.' - Trace Davis, President / Founder

I've used these strings since they first came out & I can honestly say that they're extremely consistent & legitimately last longer than all the others I've tried. These are my go to so give'em a try! - Trace Davis, President / Founder

Suspending Modifications

Suspending Modifications – Demand for Voodoo Amps Production Models is increasing & the demand on my time has never been greater. As such the time has come to focus my time & energies on our new Voodoo Production Line of amplifiers & speaker cabs. As of Oct 1st 2016 we are suspending Modifications to the public for the time being. Over the course of the next few months all current in-house orders for Mods & Hand-Wired builds will be completed. Mod Warranties are still 100% valid. Warranty claims will go through our good friend & all around amazing amp tech Mr Lane Sparber who also resides in Upstate NY.

I sincerely believe we have designed the highest quality production model tube amplifiers available on the market today while at the same time ensuring the amps are incredibly easy to service & maintain. Our new Single Channel Production models start at $3,499.00 & are selectable between 50 & 100 watts all in one amp with the new multi channel models due to be released shortly!

On a personal note, I founded the company in 1998 out of a spare bedroom of an apartment with the modest goal of bringing Pro Tone to the public. Over the years we have pushed the envelope on the Modification Business & I am so very proud of the work we have done. We’ve established amazing relationships & in many cases forged life long friendships with so many of you that there simply aren’t words for how truly grateful I am for that.

I’m extremely excited for this next chapter & please stay tuned as we have so many great things coming up that we will be announcing soon! Most importantly & with extreme gratitude I want to say THANK YOU for your continued support! It means everything to me & more! – Trace Davis, President / Founder of Voodoo Amplification Inc

1950's Amp Restoration!

We recently restored an old Gibson GA50 to its former glory! This amp sounds stunning & is incredibly easy to play with amazing sustain whether it is set to clean or cranked into overdrive! This amp also used the old school ‘Octal’ preamp tubes, which are an 8-pin configuration more commonly associated with that of a power tube. The tone is very 3 dimensional & addictive to play on! Please feel free to share as you like & tag your friends!

Back from Summer Namm 2016!

Good Monday Morning gang! The mighty whirlwind of Summer Namm is behind us & where do I begin? (lol) Please bear with me as my beloved coffee maker decided to stop working this fine morning (lol). We flew in from Nashville yesterday & are back in the shop this morning as I am typing this.

First & foremost it was amazing to meet so many of you in person for the very first time & to watch so many outstanding players come through the booth to test drive the amps! It’s truly humbling & I cannot possibly thank you enough for that, sincerely.

I have to thank our amazing team of people as without them this show would not have happened nor have been as successful as it was; Don Friedricksen, Matt Fenderson, Jessie Smith, Sean Monroe, Mike Oshetski, Jim Rotundo, Cindy Davis, John Stack, Jason Harlow, Steve Senes, James Kennedy & Russ Kanser! You guys rock & thank you for all the hard work!

Live Videos - For the first time ever we did a ‘Live’ Facebook video broadcast from the Namm Show Floor using an iPhone. For those who couldn’t tune in live the videos were saved & are available for you to check out on our Facebook pages. Stay tuned as we will be posting lots of photos of everyone coming through the booth!

I’ve been asked many times ‘How do you think the show went for you?’ That’s a dual fold answer & I’ll explain. The turn out was amazing & we were blessed that our booth was consistently busy the entire time but the honest truth is, I designed these amps for you to play on, for you to express yourself on & hopefully in some small way to inspire you when you are playing on them. A million thanks to each & every one of you!! – Trace Davis, President / Founder.
